County Schools Recognized by State

The Colorado Department of Education recognized 35 Douglas County schools at the 2013 School and District Performance Awards.

Twenty-three country schools received the John Irwin Award, based on demonstrated excellent academic achievement.  The Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Award, based on demonstrated exceptional student growth, was awarded to 12 schools.

Of the 35 country schools, six received both the John Irwin and Governor’s Distinguished Improvement awards.

Douglas County Schools earns National Green Ribbon

In addition, the Colorado Department of Education recognized the Douglas County School District the national Green Ribbon School District Award, given by the U.S. Department of Education earlier this year. Douglas County School District is the only school district in Colorado to win the award.

“Earning the District Green Ribbon Award for Sustainability is a tremendous honor, which our students and staff have earned through their hard work and dedication,” said Lee Smit, sustainability manager for the Douglas County School District.  “Our District leadership has provided the support and foundation from which we were able to build the programs we have today.  We are proud of what we have accomplished, and we continue to grow and improve on what we have achieved.”

Douglas County Schools efforts for the Green Ribbon

My daughters’ school (Copper Mesa Elementary) have worked hard to earn the Green Ribbon Award.  Two years ago they started a garden on the side of the school building.  Each grade was in charge of planting their favorite vegetable.  The produce is used in some of the cafeteria lunches.  The students have been diligent about recycling for a long time.  I’ve noticed that many of the art projects that come home are made with odds and ends that are recycled pieces.  This year the students have started a compost.  I’m so proud that my girls are learning to respect this beautiful world we live in.
